Description of the data set
NCHS has conducted a mortality linkage of the 1985 National Nursing Home Survey (NNHS) with the NCHS National Death Index (NDI). The 1985 NNHS, conducted between August 1985 and January 1986, collected baseline data on a sample of current nursing home residents as well as a sample of discharged residents whose discharge occurred within a 12-month period prior to the facility contact. There were 11,170 individual subjects - 5,195 current residents and 5,975 discharged residents included in the 1985 NNHS after accounting for those residents who had more than one sampled stay. To supplement the current and discharge resident components, the 1985 NNHS included a Next-of-Kin (NOK) component. The NOK collected data for 9,077 NNHS subjects from October 1985 to January 1986.

The National Nursing Home Survey Followup (NNHSF) was a longitudinal study of the 1985 NNHS. The NNHSF built on the data collection of the 1985 NNHS and NOK by extending the period of observation by approximately 5 years. The followup consisted of three waves of data collection. Wave I, conducted from August through December of 1987, had 6001 completed interviews. Wave II with 3,868 completed interviews was conducted from July through November of 1988. There were 3,041 completed interviews for Wave III which was fielded from January through April 1990. Linkage of the 1985 NNHS survey participants with the NDI provides the opportunity to conduct studies designed to investigate the association of a variety of health factors with mortality.

Data file description
The 1985 NNHS linked mortality file contains information based upon the results from a probabilistic match between the NCHS National Death Index (NDI) records and survey indication of death. The 1985 NNHS linked mortality file provides mortality follow-up data from the date of 1985 NNHS survey participation through December 31, 2000. All 1985 NNHS participants aged 18-117 years of age are included on the linked mortality file. Additional variables provided on the file include: assigned vital status, date of death, age of death, underlying and multiple causes of death.

Data file technical characteristics
The NNHS linked mortality file is available in SAS and ASCII file formats. The total number of records is 11,170.

Data Availability
Due to confidentiality requirements, the 1985 NNHS linked mortality data are only accessible through the NCHS Research Data Center (RDC). All interested researchers must submit a research proposal to the RDC to use the 1985 NNHS linked mortality data. The RDC offers both on-site and remote user access. Approved researchers will be able to analyze data from the 1985 NNHS standard linked mortality file which contains information on 1985 NNHS participant eligibility status, vital status, date of death, age at death, and underlying and contributing causes of death. Additional death certificate data are available by special request. Requests for access to special request variables should be clearly documented in the researcher’s RDC proposal.
