These self-study programs provide the most current information available in the constantly changing field of immunization. Session One will cover principles of vaccination, general recommendations on immunization, and vaccine storage, handling, and administration and vaccine safety. Session Two will cover pertussis, pneumococcal disease (childhood), rotavirus, and Hib. Session Three will cover measles, rubella, varicella, zoster, polio, and meningococcal disease. Session Four will cover hepatitis B, hepatitis A, influenza, HPV, and pneumococcal disease (adult). Each of the four sessions can be viewed independently for CE credit.
Goal
To improve immunization practices in the United States.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this self-study series, participants will be able to:
  • Describe the difference between active and passive immunity.
  • List two characteristics of live attenuated vaccines.
  • List two characteristics of inactivated vaccines.
  • Describe each vaccine-preventable disease, including the causative agent for the disease.
  • List the groups at highest risk for each vaccine-preventable disease.
  • Identify those for whom routine immunization is recommended for each vaccine-preventable disease.
  • Describe characteristics of the vaccine used to prevent each disease. (Characteristics may include schedule, contraindications and/or adverse reactions).
Target Audience
Physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, DoD paraprofessionals, pharmacists, health educators and their colleagues who either administer vaccines or set policy for their offices, clinics, communicable disease, or infection control programs. Both private and public healthcare providers, including pediatricians, family practice specialists, residents, and medical and nursing students.

Continuing Education Credit
Continuing Education (CE) will be provided free of charge and will be available at http://www2a.cdc.gov/phtnonline.

CME Statement
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention designates this educational activity for a maximum of 2.75 to 3 category 1 credits toward the AMA Physician's Recognition Award. Each physician should claim only those credits that he/she actually spent in the activity.

CPE Statement
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education.

This program is a designated event for pharmacists to receive .25 to .3 CEUs in pharmacy education. The Universal Program Numbers are, respectively, 387-000-07-005-H04, 387-000-07-006-H01, 387-000-07-007-H01, 387-000-07-008-H01.

CNE Statement
This activity for 2.75 to 3 contact hours is provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which is accredited as a provider of continuing education in nursing by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation.

CECH Statement
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is a designated provider of continuing education contact hours (CECH) in health education by the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing, Inc. This program is a designated event for the CHES to receive 2 ½ to 3 Category I contact hours in health education, CDC provider number GA0082.
