March 12 – 14, 2007 BackgroundIn the past decades, the US-Mexico border region has experienced diverse changes ranging from increased industrialization to a marked demographic explosion. These developments have in turn resulted in numerous environmental and toxicological issues, which have put a great deal of pressure on local governments and citizens. In 2002, the General Accounting Office produced a report on border environmental and public health infrastructure and identified the main barriers toward resolving these issues as: 1) limited financial support for needed projects and 2) lack of human capital. To deal with these emerging issues, a Binational Center was envisioned to specifically tackle binational hazardous waste problems and human capital training. Meeting DescriptionAn inaugural ceremony will take place for the newly established US-Mexico Binational Center for Environmental Sciences and Toxicology at The University of Arizona. Following the Inaugural Ceremony, a two-day Global Environmental Health Workshop will occur incorporating four to six invited talks per thematic session to give a broad overview. For each session there will be a concurrent poster session which will increase the input within specific research topics. The workshop is being coordinated in conjunction with:
