Roberto Gonzalez Echevarria, sterling professor of comparative literature at Yale University, presented "Reflections on the First World Baseball Classic of 2006" in a program sponsored by the Hispanic Division. A major literary critic of Spanish and Latin American Literature, he is an expert on baseball and the author of "The Pride of Havana," winner of the Dave Moore Award of Best Baseball Book in 2002. Echevarria was born in Cuba and in his youth played semi-professional baseball.
Speaker Biography: Roberto Gonzalez Echevarria teaches Hispanic and comparative literatures at Yale University where he is also chairman of the department of Spanish and Portuguese. One of the early editors of Diacritics and The Yale Journal of Criticism, Echevarria is the author of many books on Spanish and Latin American literatures. His "Myth and Archive: A Theory of Latin American Narrative" (1990) won awards from the Modern Language Association of America and The Latin American Studies Association. His "The Pride of Havana: A History of Cuban Baseball" (1999), which also won an award, is Echevarria's contribution to cultural studies. He is the recipient of several honorary degrees, the most recent a doctor in letters honoris causa from Columbia University in May of 2002.
