The following links provide some of the more salient sources for political science information on the Internet for readers in the Hispanic Reading Room. Note that some items are subscription items and not readily available on the Web. Unless otherwise noted, the sites listed in this directory are provided by organizations other than the Library of Congress. Features profiles of different countries, presented by American Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) News Internet Ventures. Includes information on the history, culture, geography, natural resources, government, politics, economics, and demographics of each country. Provides color maps, flags, and sound files of national anthems. Available, along with related articles, from the abcnews home page by searching for "country profile" for all countries or "country profile" and the country name for a specific country.

This website contains the on-line versions of books previously published in hard copy by the Federal Research Division of the Library of Congress under the Country Studies/Area Handbook Program sponsored by the U.S. Department of Army. Because the original intent of the Series' sponsor was to focus primarily on lesser known areas of the world or regions in which U.S. forces might be deployed, the series is not all-inclusive. At present, 101 countries and regions are covered. Notable omissions include Canada, France, the United Kingdom, and other Western nations, as well as a number of African nations. The date of information for each country appears on the title page of each country and at the end of each secion of text.

Features a weekly online report of the Economist Intelligence Unit Ltd., an information provider for companies establishing and managing operations across national borders anywhere in the world. Offers access to articles in the current issue and in previous issues.



Encyclopædia Britannica online (http://search.eb.com/)


"EB Online includes the complete encyclopedia, as well as Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary and the Britannica Book of the Year. You can also use EB Online to search an Internet directory that includes more than 130,000 links to Web sites selected, rated, and reviewed by Britannica editors."--Secondary page.

Features Ethnic NewsWatch, a collection of full-text newspapers, magazines, and journals of the ethnic, minority and native press, provided by SoftLine Information, Inc. The resource is available in English and Spanish, but a username and password is required.



Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta: Latin America Research Group

Features the Latin America Research Group of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta in Georgia. The group studies economic, financial, and political developments in Latin America and the Caribbean. Includes staff papers, presentations, and economic analysis articles.

Beginning with v. 26, 1964, the print volumes alternate coverage between social sciences and humanities. This online source, beginning in 1936, is The most important source for bibliography of books and articles concerning the social sciences and humanities relating to Latin America and the Caribbean. The Handbook of Latin American Studies is produced by over 140 contributing editors under the editorship of the Hispanic Division of the Library of Congress.

Provides image and full-text online access to back issues of selected scholarly journals in history, economics, political science, demography, mathematics and other fields of the humanities and social sciences. Consult the online tables of contents for holdings, as coverage varies for each title.

The Latin American Government Documents Archive (LAGDA) at the University of Texas seeks to preserve and facilitate access to a wide range of ministerial and presidential documents from 18 Latin American and Caribbean countries.


Political Database of the Americas (http://www.georgetown.edu/LatAmerPolitical/)


Presents the Political Database of the Americas from the Georgetown University Center for Latin American Studies, available in English, Spanish, French, and Portuguese. Includes constitutions, electoral information, and political party descriptions for Latin American countries.


ProQuest digital dissertations (http://wwwlib.umi.com/dissertations/)


Includes citations for dissertations ranging from 1861 to those accepted last semester; those published from 1980 forward include 350-word abstracts. Citations for master's theses from 1988 forward include 150-word abstracts. Titles represent authors from North America and Europe, with over a million titles in full text.
