The long term objective is to translate basic research into clinical and therapeutic applications, such as non-addictive analgesics for relief from chronic and acute pain stemming from trauma, cancer, or surgery, and antagonists to modulate neural reward mechanisms dealing with addiction to opiate drugs, alcohol and food. The Medicinal Chemistry Group is a constituent member of the Laboratory of Pharmacology whose mission is the combined development of laboratory methods for humans and animals with computational, statistical, and mathematical methods to further the understanding of the mechanisms underlying environmental disease and to provide the linkage between "cutting edge" research in environmental health and the evaluation of health risks from environmental exposures.
