The goal of the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial scanning service is to provide a quality digital image to researchers within a reasonable period of time without damaging the original material. Only images are available through this service; optical character recognition (OCR) is not available. An adapter is available for transparent media. The largest available scanner is 12 x 17 inches; material over that size cannot be scanned. Personal scanners are not permitted in the library.

Digital reproductions will be performed by a member of the JNEM staff. The image will be delivered as a JPEG file with a medium to low resolution (150-200 DPI) sufficient for study purposes. No cropping or other manipulation will be made to the original image as it is being transferred. Copies are produced with the understanding that the use of images will be limited to fair use as defined by the Copyright Act. It is the researcher's responsibility to secure copyright approval for each image.

Please note: Requests for high-resolution images, or TIFF files, (typical resolution: 600 DPI) for use in publications, will be treated as requests for publication rights. For publishing requests, a brief description of the project describing the context in which the image(s) will be used must be submitted in a short letter/fax addressed to Mardi Arce.

Once the request is approved, a JNEM staff person will contact the researcher to proceed with the image request.

JNEM can provide images in a variety of formats, including diskette, zip disk, CD, e-mail attachment of the digital file, or color print. Diskettes must be purchased from JNEM; no diskettes provided by researchers may be used. Every effort will be made to fit as many images onto a disk as possible. Please note that the JNEM staff will not add additional images to any diskette after it has been removed from the premises.

Every attempt will be made to deliver the images in a timely manner; however, actual delivery time will be determined by staffing, workload and the size of the request. JNEM reserves the right to refuse to honor requests for excessive scanning services. The park also reserves the right to refuse requests that appear to be beyond the boundaries of fair use practice. Researchers should also understand that when JNEM provides a scanned image, public domain status is not directly implied for such images.
