City Directories

The St. Louis City Directories contain both residential and commercial listings. The directories in the JNEM collection roughly cover the years 1889-1937. Residential entries often list an individual's occupation along with an address. Some St. Louis area businesses are also represented in special display ads throughout the directories. The books are primarily used for genealogy work and for locating addresses and names of old St. Louis business firms. The directories do not circulate. For additional information, contact the JNEM Library.

The library's holdings include directories from the following years:

Dinosaur cartoon

Did You Know?
On September 10, 1804 on Cedar Island, in South Dakota, William Clark discovered the fossilized remains of the ribs, backbone and teeth of a plesiosaur. Plesiosaurs were animals who lived at the same time as the dinosaurs, but swam rather than walking on land. Clark thought it was a giant fish bone!
