Purpose

NHANES I data files are available for download from the website as data (.DAT) files along with the SAS code to create a SAS dataset, and the documentation explaining how the data are arranged in the data files. To use these files you need to create a directory to save them, download the data files, SAS code, and documentation, and then run the SAS code to create the SAS datasets.

Task 1: Create a directory for NHANES I files

You will create a directory to save your data files, documentation, SAS code, and the SAS datasets you create. This will help keep your executable files and datasets organized.

Task 2: Download NHANES I data files and documentation

You need the data files to create your analytic dataset, and you need the documentation for reference as you continue your analysis.

Task 3: Run the SAS code to create the NHANES I SAS datasets

After downloading the data files and the SAS code, you will need to execute the SAS code to create the analytic dataset you will save in your directory. Data files are not usable without completing this task.
