Thompson today announced the award of $4.5 million to programs that train retired professionals to help older Americans become better health care consumers, help identify and prevent billing errors and potential fraud. The 51 Senior Medicare Patrol Project grants include 28 new projects and 23 continuations that are distributed in 45 states plus the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. 2001 HHS Awards $9.3 Million for Senior Medicare Patrol Projects (June 11, 2001) HHS Secretary Tommy G. AoA Announces New Grants to Help Spot Waste, Fraud and Abuse in Medicare and Medicaid (June 26, 2000) Jeanette C. Takamura, Assistant Secretary for Aging, today announced that the Administration on Aging (AoA) plans to award 19 new and 29 renewed grants for a program that recruits and trains retired professionals to identify fraud, waste and abuse in the Medicare and Medicaid programs. 1999 AoA’s Medicare Fraud Program to be Honored (September 20, 1999) The Administration on Aging (AoA) in the Department of Health and Human Services, (HHS) together with Senators Tom Harkin (D-IA) and Arlen Specter (R-PA) will honor the outstanding contributions of 12 senior volunteers who serve as community educators and resources in the nation’s fight against Medicare and Medicaid waste, fraud and abuse. HHS Announces Expanded "Senior Patrol" Grants to Help Spot Waste, Fraud and Abuse in Medicare and Medicaid (June 17, 1999) HHS Secretary Donna E. Shalala, joined by U.S. Sen. Tom Harkin (D-IA), today announced 41 grants totaling $7 million to expand a program that recruits and trains retired professionals to identify waste, fraud and abuse in the Medicare and Medicaid programs. Assistant Secretary for Aging to Participate in National Medicare Anti-Fraud and Abuse Outreach Campaign in Chicago (February 19, 1999) Jeanette C. Takamura, Assistant Secretary for Aging in the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), has announced the availability of funding opportunities to train retired persons as volunteer expert resources and educators in community efforts to combat waste, fraud, and abuse in the Medicare and Medicaid programs. 1998 Medicare Expands Crackdown On Waste, Fraud And Abuse In Community Mental Health Centers (September 29, 1998) The Department of Health and Human Services today announced new actions to ensure that Medicare beneficiaries with acute mental illness get quality treatment in community mental health centers and that Medicare pays appropriately for those services. HHS Announces Program To Reward Reports Of Medicare Fraud (June 3, 1998) HHS Secretary Donna E. Shalala announced a new regulation today which will make citizens who alert Medicare of possible acts of fraud and abuse eligible for rewards if their information leads directly to the recovery of Medicare money.
