Contaminant Effects
EL researchers are conducting research in the processes that control exposure of organisms to contaminants in water, sediments, and soils to develop predictive methods for exposure and bioaccumulation potential. This involves the characterization of contaminant and geochemical covariant levels, distribution, mobility, and transport. Several researchers are involved in experiments to describe outwardly observable (lethality, growth, reproduction, etcÂ…) and inwardly quantifiable (biochemical and cellular responses) toxic effects of contaminants within exposed organisms. Testing methods are being developed using cell-based and transgenic technology to assess contaminant effects in an inexpensive and efficient manner. |
