Genomic Competencies for the Public Health Workforce

Type:

CDC initiated
Goal(s):
   The aim of this effort is to create a working list of genomic competencies for the public health workforce. Genomic competencies are the skills, knowledge and attitudes necessary for the public health workforce to integrate genomic discoveries into Public Health actions that promote health and prevent disease.

This effort derives from a broader CDC/ATSDR mission to improve the ability of public health workers nationwide to perform the essential services of public health and to prepare the workforce to respond to current and emerging health threats.

Primary target audience: The federal, state, and local public health workforce (approximately 500,000 persons)

Progress:
   Ongoing. An initial set including general, professional, and six discipline specific lists of competencies were developed and are open for comments and feedback. The two main purposes of the genomic competencies are development of educational programs for the Public Health workforce and incorporation into existing or new position specific workforce competencies.

Outcome:
   Additional information on the competencies (including background and next steps) can be found at: http://www.cdc.gov/genetics/training/competencies/default.html
