The Veterans’ Experience

The plight of the U.S. veteran returning from war has long captured Hollywood’s interest and moviegoers’ imaginations. The National Archives – Central Plains Region and the Liberty Memorial Museum are presenting the following films free to the public. Each film will be introduced by a film or history scholar.

Friday Feb 3: The Big Parade
A 1925 silent film about a disillusioned and disabled World War I veteran.

Friday Feb 17: I am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang
Paul Muni stars in the classic 1930’s film. Based on the life of veteran Robert E. Burns, who was unjustly convicted of a crime.

Friday March 3: Heroes for Sale
One of the best “social conscience” films of the 1930’s concerning war veterans.

Friday March 17: The Fighting 69th
James Cagney and Pat O’Brien star in this story of an Irish-American regiment in World War I.

Friday March 31: The Roaring Twenties
Raoul Walsh’s direction of James Cagney and Humphery Bogart ensures that this story of a World War I veteran-turned-gangster is one of the best films in that genre.
