Summary

Pursuant to a congressional request, GAO provided information on law enforcement activities at the Bureau of Land Management, the Fish and Wildlife Service, the National Park Service, and the Forest Service.

GAO noted the: (1) number of employees involved in law enforcement activities; (2) annual payroll for law enforcement personnel in each agency; (3) costs associated with these law enforcement activities; (4) nature and extent of these activities; (5) federal dollars allocated for contracts or cooperative agreements with state and local governments; (6) number of cases each agency has requested the Federal Bureau of Investigations, and the Drug Enforcement Administration to investigate; (7) number of arrests made by each agency each year; and (8) number of complaints, both formal and informal, that have been lodged against each agency's law enforcement personnel in each of the past 5 years.
