HUNGARY
In 2000, the National Park Service signed a bilateral agreement with Hungary's Authority for Nature Conservation (ANC). The agreement authorizes a program of technical exchange and cooperation in the conservation and management of national parks and protected natural areas. A joint workplan was negotiated in 2001. As part of the agreement, Sister Park relationships have been formed between U.S. and Hungarian parks.
ITALY
The National Park Service's Northeast Regional Office has an official agreement with the Italian Nature Conservation Service (Servizio Conservazione della Natura) of the Ministry of the Environment (Ministero dell'Ambiente e della Tutela del Territorio) of the Republic of Italy, signed in 2000, authorizing professional exchange on a variety of landscape and park management issues common to both countries. More information on this cooperation can be found at the Conservation Study Institute's website.
SPAIN
In 2000, the National Park Service entered into a bilateral agreement with Spain's Autonomous Agency for National Parks (OAPN). The agreement authorizes a five-year program of technical exchange and cooperation in the protection and management of national parks and other protected natural areas. Under this agreement, the Director of OAPN recently visited the United States and many of its national parks to exchange ideas and share experiences with NPS managers on a variety of park management issues. Future planned activities include a training workshop on the development of park interpretation programs and facilities.
POLAND
The Midwest Regional Office of the National Park Service manages the NPS Agreement with the Board of Polish National Parks, signed in 1998 and renewed in 2003. Much of the collaboration with Poland has been through the Sister Parks Program, in particular between Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore and Kampinos National Park and between Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore and Slowinkski National Park.
RUSSIA
The Shared Beringian Heritage Program, managed by the National Park Service's Alaska Region Office works to promote free communication and active cooperation between the governments and people of the United States and Russia concerning the Central Beringia region.
See the Sister Parks page for other NPS activities in Europe.
