New York University Faculty of Arts and Science College of Arts and Science Graduate School of Arts and Science

Welcome

The Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences is the home of the departments of Mathematics and Computer Science, and the Center for Atmosphere-Ocean Science at New York University. It is home to our research and educational activities, interdisciplinary research divisions, and various laboratories, including fluids and multimedia to name two. Founded by Richard Courant in 1935, the Institute has a history of tackling fundamental problems in science and engineering not typically found in traditional departments.  <<Read More about the Institute>>

Announcements

Olga Sorkine Receives 2008 Eurographics Young Researcher Award
For her "outstanding contributions to interactive geometric modeling, shape approximation, and shape and image manipulation," Olga Sorkine has been presented with a Eurographics Young Researcher Award. In their announcement, Eurographics emphasizes that "Olga's work equally stands out, both for its sound mathematical analysis, and for its immediate practical relevance" and that she "will continue to have a profound impact on the field in the years to come." More information is available at: http://www.eg.org/about/awards/winners/winner_sorkine

Yann LeCun and Sylvain Cappell named 2008 Silver Professors
Yann LeCun and Sylvain Cappell have both been honored with Silver Professorships. These chairs are awarded annually to "outstanding scholars who have made NYU one of the greatest research and teaching centers in the country," and are funded by an endowment to the University from former alumnus Julius Silver (who served as Chair of the Polaroid Corporation for many years).

Andy Majda receives Margaret and Herman Sokol Faculty Award
Andy Majda, NYU Samuel Morse Professor of Arts & Sciences, is this year's recipient of the Margaret and Herman Sokol Faculty Award in the Sciences, presented annually to a member of the science faculty in recognition of excellence in his or her work for the University as a teacher, scholar, and colleague.  Majda will be presented with the award and will give a lecture on his research this Fall.

Ken Perlin receives the ACM SIGGRAPH Computer Graphics Achievement Award
For his "broad contributions and impact across computer graphics," ACM SIGGRAPH has presented Ken Perlin with an ACM SIGGRAPH Computer Graphics Achievement Award. ACM SIGGRAPH states that Perlin's "creative research approach has produced many innovations in rendering, modeling, animation and user interfaces and has inspired several new lines of research," and emphasizes that "running through all of Ken's research are common threads of promoting community, supporting expressiveness and exploration, and forming bridges between technology and artistic expression." Further details can be found at: http://old.siggraph.org/awards/2008/2008_CG_achievement.pdf

Subhash Khot receives the SIAM Outstanding Paper Prize
For his paper,  Ruling Out PTAS for Graph Min-Bisection, Dense k-Subgraph, and Bipartite Clique, published in the SIAM Journal on Computing, Vol. 36, No. 4 (2006), Subhash Khot has received the SIAM Outstanding Paper Prize. The award is for outstanding papers published in SIAM Journals that "bring a fresh look at an existing field or that open up new areas of applied mathematics."

Assaf
Naor Receives 2008 EMS Prize
Assaf Naor is the recipient of a European Mathematical Society Prize for his "ground-breaking contributions to three mathematical fields: functional analysis, the theory of algorithms and combinatorics." The EMS Citation also states that "Naor is the leading architect of the modern theory of non-linear functional analysis: a theory that has taken off in recent years and has become an essential tool in mathematical computer science." On July 17th, Naor will deliver a lecture related to the award titled "The Story of the Sparsest Cut Problem." For more details, please see: http://www.5ecm.nl/prizewinnersbook.pdf.

Assaf Naor receives Prof. Ernst D. Bergmann Memorial Award
The United States-Israel Binational Science Foundation presented Assaf Naor with the Prof. Ernst D. Bergmann Memorial Award at its ceremony on July 9, 2008. Naor, along with Dr. Manor Mendel (Open  University of Israel), have been granted this award for their "proposed research entitled Geometric Techniques for the Analysis and Design of Algorithms on Metric Data."

Chris Bregler receives 2008 IEEE Longuet-Higgins Prize

Chris Bregler and Jitendra Malik (Berkeley) have received the 2008 Longuet-Higgins Prize from the IEEE  for "fundamental contributions in computer vision that have withstood the test of time"  The prize was awarded for their 1998 paper "Tracking people with twists and exponential maps", which is described in the prize citation as an inspired application of kinematic modeling techniques from robotics to the challenge of tracking people in motion from a single camera view, including a memorable model-based analysis of the Muybridge motion study video.

David Bindel receives 2008 Alston S. Householder Award
David Bindel was presented with the Householder award at the Householder Symposium held from June 1-6, 2008 in Zeuthen, Germany. It is given every three years for the best dissertation in numerical linear algebra during the preceding three year interval. His talk was entitled Computer-Aided Design of MEMS: Eigenvalues, Energy Losses, and Dick Tracy Watches.
