Fall 2007 Genealogy Workshops at the National Archives Northeast Region - New York City

The National Archives - Northeast Region offers free workshops to help you research your family history. We will highlight records from National Archives holdings including passenger arrival, Federal Census, and naturalization records, and we will discuss non-Federal sources including State census records. These workshops are part of our lunchtime brown bag series, so please feel free to bring your lunch. All programs are free and open to the public.

Tuesday, September 11
Finding Family: Using Passenger Arrival Records
Immigration records, also known as "ship passenger arrival records," can provide genealogical information including a person's nationality, place of birth, exact date and means (ship name, for example) of entry into the United States, profession, place of last residence, and more. This workshop will help you learn more about our passenger arrival records and what resources are available online and in our Reference Room.

Tuesday, November 13
Finding Family: State and Non-Population Census Schedules
When historical or genealogical researchers consider the U.S. Federal Census, they most often think only of the population schedules. However, the non-population schedules can be just as interesting - and informative. The non-population schedules of agriculture, manufacturing, mortality, and veterans provide a wealth of otherwise unrecoverable detail. We will discuss these schedules as well as State census records.

Tuesday, December 11
Finding Family: Using Naturalization Records
Naturalization is the process by which an immigrant becomes an American citizen. These records can provide genealogical information including a person's place and date of birth, occupation, the details of their legal entry into the U.S., information on their marital status and spouse and children, the names and addresses of witnesses, and more. Learn what resources are available to help you use naturalization records in your family research.

All workshops are from 12:30 PM to 1:30 PM. Workshops are free but space is limited, so please call, fax, or e-mail to register. Please contact us with any questions.

You can also find schedules and further information on our programs, exhibits, and events on our Calendar of Events online: http://www.archives.gov/northeast/nyc/public/workshops.html.
