Notice to Researchers: Consolidation of Holdings in NARA's New York Office; Access to Some Records Temporarily Affected

Beginning in July 2005 the National Archives - New York Office will move some of its holdings to NARA's state-of-the art underground storage facility in Lee's Summit, Missouri. The materials selected to be moved include Records of U.S. Attorneys (RG 118), Records of the U.S. Court of Appeals (RG 276), and a portion of Records of District Courts of the United States (RG 21). We will also rearrange records within our New York facility to better serve the public.

The relocation project is part of a re-design of our existing space. We will increase the number of public access computers, create a quiet room for researchers using original archival records, establish a records processing area, and improve the security of our records holding area. These changes respond to recent research trends, including growing demand for online research tools.

During the move, some records will be temporarily unavailable for research. We will post information on our web site and at our Office to inform researchers about records that are temporarily unavailable. At this time, in addition to the three groups mentioned above, Records of the U.S. Customs Service (RG 36) are temporarily unavailable.

All naturalization records will remain available for use in the New York Office.

During this transition, we will continue to provide in-person, telephone, mail, and e-mail reference services. We request your patience during our move and suggest that you contact us in advance to confirm that records are available. The National Archives in New York will continue to provide excellent customer service regardless of the physical location of our holdings. As is already the case, records stored off-site will be available to researchers within a maximum of three business days of a request. The New York Office will remain open Monday, Wednesday, Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; Tuesday and Thursday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. (only microfilm and computer research after 4:30 p.m.); first Saturday of each month, microfilm and computer research only from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
