Waltham, MA...With the nationwide release of the Walt Disney movie "National Treasure", people in New England may be surprised to discover local treasures at the National Archives and Records Administration Northeast Region branch, located at 380 Trapelo Road in Waltham, MA.

The National Archives Northeast Region (Boston) has more than 25,000 cubic feet of archival material dating from 1789 to the 1970s, including documents, photographs, maps, and architectural drawings. These records were created or received by the Federal courts and over 80 Federal agencies in Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island.

Among subjects of local interest are: War of 1812 prize cases in Massachusetts; fortifications, lighthouses, life saving stations, and other coastal facilities; the 1930s Passamaquoddy Tidal Power Project in Maine; World War II era research projects at Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology; and Federal court, Naval, Coast Guard, and Customs activities.

The National Archives Northeast Region is also a major center for genealogical and family history research. Among our holdings are:
  • Census Records, all United States, 1790 - 1930
  • Naturalization records, New England states, 1790 - 1970s (varies by state)
  • Passenger Lists for ships arriving in Boston, New York, Baltimore, Philadelphia and other east coast ports (various dates)
  • Draft, Military Service, and Pension and Bounty Land Application Files
  • Chinese Exclusion Act Case Files
  • Freedmen's Bureau and Records Related to African American Families
  • Dawes Commission Final Cards of the Five Civilized Tribes

The National Archives-Northeast Region regularly offers free workshops to teachers. Massachusetts teachers may earn up to 10 Professional Development Points by attending 5 of these workshops. We also offer free genealogical workshops. All workshops are open to the public.

Hours of operation are 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. daily, Thursday 8:00 a.m. - 9:00 p.m., and the first and third Saturday of each month 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Excludes all Federal holidays.
