Press Release, December 2004

Girl Scout Day at the National Archives in Waltham

For Immediate Release
For Further Information: Stuart Culy (866) 406-2379

Waltham, MA... The National Archives-Northeast Region is offering informational presentations and behind the scenes tours to Girl Scout Troops in January 2005.

The presentations will inform the Girl Scout Troops, their leaders and parents about what the National Archives does, what documents and records we hold, and what National Archives staff do.

All activities will be offered at the Regional Archives building, located at 380 Trapelo Road in Waltham, MA every hour on the hour, from 9:00 to 3:00 on Saturday January 15. Space is limited, so Troops must register with Stuart Culy by calling (866) 406-2379 or by e-mail at stuart.culy@nara.gov. Indicate the Troop, the number of Scouts, the number of adult chaperons, and the time you wish to start. Smaller groups may be combined.

Regional Administrator, Diane LeBlanc, will be on hand to welcome the scouts, leaders, and parents.

There are many Girl Scout badges which Scouts may earn in part by using the resources of the National Archives. Our holdings are an excellent resource for Family History and Genealogy related documents, such as Census Records and Immigration and Naturalization Records.

The National Archives Northeast Region (Boston) has more than 25,000 cubic feet of archival material dating from 1789 to the 1970s, including primarily textual documents but also some photographs, maps, and architectural drawings. Among other subjects of local interest are: War of 1812 prize cases in Massachusetts; fortifications, lighthouses, life saving stations, and other coastal facilities; the 1930s Passamaquoddy Tidal Power Project in Maine; World War II era research projects at Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology; and Federal court, Naval, Coast Guard, and Customs activities.

The mission of the National Archives is to ensure, for the Citizen and the Public Servant, for the President and the Congress and the Courts, ready access to essential evidence.
