Professional Development Workshops

  • Basic Records Operations

    This course describes what to file, how to file it, and how to remove files no longer needed for current business. It covers the variety of activities involved in the maintenance and use, as well as the disposition of Federal records. Basic Records Operations (BRO) is a new addition to the Federal records management training program offered by the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA).

    Outcomes

    By the end of the course, participants will be able to
    • Define Federal records and distinguish them from nonrecord materials and personal papers
    • Reduce unnecessary filing
    • Know basic files management principles to administer office records
    • Inventory records
    • Apply records disposition schedules; your agency's and the General Records Schedules

    The target audience for this course is records liaisons, secretaries, files custodians, and others who maintain records as part of their jobs.   • Electronic Records Management

    The course is designed to provide the skills and knowledge needed to manage electronic records throughout the records lifecycle, and to take steps required to transition from a paper to an electronic records environment.

    On completion of the Electronic Records Management course, participants will be able to:

    • Define key terms related to electronic records management
    • Describe the advantages and limitation of electronic records
    • Identify laws, regulations and legal policies and practices that impact electronic recordkeeping requirements in the Federal agency
    • Recognize the necessity of involving Information Technology (IT) professionals in records management
    • Identify recordkeeping requirements for electronic records
    • Describe the characteristics of electronic records to consider when determining scheduling and disposition instructions

  • Advanced Electronic Records Management

    Although the same principles of records management apply to electronic records and system, there continue to be special considerations for creating and managing electronic records. Designed for individuals with prior background in electronic recordkeeping, the course expands on the basic electronic records management knowledge in other NARA courses. It is an investigation of issues, people, and tools related to electronic records management. It also looks at emerging technologies and their implications for records management.

    Outcomes

    By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

    • Recognize where to insert RM requirements into the planning, development and implementation of information systems
    • Develop and implement an enterprise-wide electronic records management (ERM) pilot
    • Identify legal requirements and policies that impact Federal information requirements for electronic records
    • Demonstrate awareness of current issues in electronic recordkeeping as well as emerging technologies and their implications for web-based records management
    • Explain techniques and tools being developed by NARA to address the challenges of electronic records management, including the Electronic Records Archives (ERA)
    • Describe the positive factors that promote collaboration between RM and IT staff
    • Describe best practices in ERM

    Who should attend?

    Participants with a baasic understanding of electronic records management through completion of the NARA Knowledge area courses, experience maintaining large collections of electronic records, or background in a technical field.

  • Emergency Planning and Response for Vital Records and Essential Information

    This course combines and integrates the content found in both the Vital Records course and the Records Emergency Planning and Response course. It provides knowledge and skills required to identify, protect, and make readily available the vital records in the event of a disaster, as well as to incorporate records emergency planning into agency COOP plans. Finally, it includes information and hands-on practice in recovering records damaged in an emergency situation. The course is based on the vital record requirements contained in FEMA's Federal Preparedness Circular 65-Guidance for Continuity of Operations Planning and CFR 36.

    Outcomes

    At the end of this practical skills-level course, participants will be able to:

    • Plan an emergency response program for records
    • Distinguish between a record and a vital record
    • Identify and assess hazards and risks to vital records
    • Identify protection strategies for vital records
    • Develop procedures to ensure access and security of vital records
    • Write a Records Emergency Action Plan
    • Assess damage to records
    • Decide on recovery techniques for damaged records

    This 2-hour briefing explores the records management issues related to e-mail in the Federal workplace.   • Records Management: A Survival Guide for Information Technology Professionals

    IT professionals are in unique positions related to electronic records as they administer the systems of an agency. They are often responsible for the servers that house the records an agency creates and for software that manages documents and records. This half-day course is designed to raise awareness within the IT community of the legal responsibilities for records management and the consequences for noncompliance that are directly tied to IT. This course will discuss system requirements, transfer specifications for electronic records and other topics. It will cover resources that are available to assist the IT professional as they perform their duties.
