Targeted Assistance

Targeted assistance is a customer-driven, project-based approach to records management. It is a partnership between NARA and your office to address a specific records management issue. You, the customer, identify the problem to be addressed. This could be the need to:

  • Establish a records management program in your office
  • Implement a records management application
  • Develop a records schedule for new records or electronic systems
  • Identify your office's vital records and create a vital records program as part of a Continuity of Operations Plan (COOP)
  • Improve records and information workflow in your office

Targeted assistance projects have clear goals and outcomes, definite milestones, and a timeframe for completion. Projects are set out in a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), or Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) which is signed by your agency and NARA officials.

The MOU states the purpose of the project, what needs to be accomplished, and when it should be completed. It also states what your agency will provide as part of the partnership, for example: agency staff time to do the work, internal coordination, and reimbursement of travel and per diem costs for non-local travel. It also says what NARA will provide, for example: records management guidance, on-site assistance and support, and customized training.

Targeted assistance is a partnership. Together we can work to resolve your records management issues. NARA provides the records management expertise; your agency's staff knows your records, work processes, and the problem that needs to be addressed.

If you think targeted assistance is needed for your office, contact us. We will be happy to discuss how we can help you and whether targeted assistance is the answer for you.

What we do for you depends on your needs. We do not charge a fee for our time, although we ask you to defray our expenses if extended, non-local travel is required. The Records Center Program services are fee-based.

If you want more information on our services and how we can assist you, please contact us. We look forward to hearing from you!
