ABBREVIATIONS AND ACRONYMS
ATSDR | Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry |
CREG | Cancer Risk Evaluation Guide (promulgating agency ATSDR). CREGs
are estimated contaminant concentrations based on a one excess cancer
in a million persons exposed over a lifetime (70 years). CREGs are
calculated from EPA's cancer slope factors. |
CPU | Clark Public Utilities |
Ecology | Washington State Department of Ecology |
EMEG | Environmental Media Evaluation Guide (promulgating agency ATSDR).
EMEGs are screening values used to select chemical contaminants of
potential health concern. EMEGs are estimated contaminant
concentrations in particular media at which daily exposure would be
unlikely to result in non-cancer health effects. EMEG values are
calculated by ATSDR using conservative exposure assumptions that
would protect the most sensitive segment of the population. |
EPA | U.S. Environmental Protection Agency |
MRL | ATSDR developed Minimal Risk Levels (MRLs) to evaluate health
effects of chemical contaminants commonly found at hazardous waste
sites. MRLs are estimates of daily exposure to contaminants below
which non-cancer, adverse health effects are unlikely to occur. |
mg/kg | milligrams per kilogram, equivalent to ppm (see below) |
ppm | parts per million (10E-6) one second in 11 & 1/2 days |
RfD | Reference Dose (EPA). EPA's Reference Dose (RfD) and Reference
Concentration (RfC) are estimates of the daily exposure to a contaminant
that is unlikely to cause adverse health effects. |
RMEG | Reference Dose-based Media Evaluation Guide calculated using
Reference Dose (RfD) (definition above). |
