TABLE OF CONTENTS
ENVIRONMENTAL CONTAMINATION AND OTHER HAZARDS
ABBREVIATIONS AND ACRONYMS
ACC | American Crossarm and Conduit |
ATSDR | Agency for Toxic Substance and Disease Registry |
CPAH | Carcinogenic PAH value is for benzo(a)pyrene (see PAHs) |
CREG | Cancer Risk Evaluation Guide (promulgating agency ATSDR). CREGs are
estimated contaminant concentrations based on one excess cancer in a million
persons exposed over a lifetime (70 years). CREGs are calculated from EPA's
cancer slope factors. |
dioxin | represents all isomers and congeners of dioxin and furans |
EMEG | Environmental Media Evaluation Guide (promulgating agency ATSDR). EMEGs
are screening values used to select chemical contaminants of potential health
concern. EMEGs are estimated contaminant concentrations in particular media at
which daily exposure would be unlikely to result in noncancer health effects. EMEG
values are calculated by ATSDR using conservative exposure assumptions that
would protect the most sensitive segment of the population. |
EPA | U.S. Environmental Protection Agency |
MRL | ATSDR developed minimal risk levels (MRLs) to evaluate health effects of chemical
contaminants commonly found at hazardous waste sites. MRLs are estimates of
daily exposure to contaminants below which noncancer, adverse health effects are
unlikely to occur. If no MRL exists for a contaminant, a comparison value is
calculated from an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Rfd, an estimate of the
daily exposure to a contaminant that is unlikely to cause noncancer, adverse health
effects. The resulting value is called an RMEG. |
mg/kg | milligrams per kilogram, equivalent to ppm (see below) |
ug/kg | micrograms per kilogram, equivalent to ppb (see below) |
ng/kg | nanograms per kilogram, equivalent to ppt (see below) |
ppm | parts per million (10E-6) one second in 11 & 1/2 days |
ppb | parts per billion (10E-9) one second in 32 years |
ppt | parts per trillion (10E-12) one second in 32,000 years |
PAHs | polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons |
PCP | pentachlorophenol |
RfD | Reference Dose (EPA). EPA's Reference Dose (RfD) and Reference Concentration
(RfC) are estimates of the daily exposure to a contaminant that is unlikely to cause
adverse health effects. |
RI/FS | Remedial Investigation/Feasibility Study |
RMEG | Reference Dose-based Media Evaluation Guide calculated using Reference Dose
(RfD) (definition above). |
