National Library of Medicine's NGI & Telemedicine
Projects
"One of the most important aspects of the NGI in the health sciences is the
use of computer and telecommunication technology for medical diagnosis and

Next Generation Internet (NGI) Projects
- In 1998, NLM announced a new, three-phase NGI research program to develop
innovative medical projects that demonstrate the use of the capabilities of
the Next Generation Internet (NGI). Information about Phase I
and Phase II awards is available.

health care;
- Assessment of various approaches to ensuring the confidentiality of
health data transmitted via electronic networks; and
- Testing of emerging health data standards.
High Performance Computing and Communications (HPCC)
- In a May 10, 1994 press release, NLM announced the award of twelve contracts designed
to help physicians practice better medicine by using advanced computing and
networking capabilities along the "information superhighway."
Telemedicine Information Exchange (TIE)
- Now funded by the National Library of Medicine, TIE's website offers updated and expanded
