NOAA Ship McARTHUR II

Engineering Department

There are six people in the Engineering Department. They are responsible for the highest light on the main mast to the lowest pump in the bilge, and everything mechanical in between. The Engineering Department consists of one Chief Marine Engineer (CME), one First Engineer (1AE), one Third Engineer (3AE), one Oiler (O), and one Wiper (W). The Engineering Department operates, maintains and repairs all propulsion and auxiliary machinery. The department also maintains the shipboard electrical system, deck machinery, launch engines, engineering spaces, ventilation, refrigeration, hydraulic, and sanitation systems.

Acting Chief Main Engineer - James R. Johnson, Hometown: Marysville , WA

Been on McARTHUR II since, March 2001.

He has been sailing with NOAA since 1975. Before NOAA, he sailed on cargo ships and fishing vessels.

Second Assistant Engineer - Matthew J. Gill, Hometown: Boston, MA

Been on McARTHUR II since, Jan 19, 2007

Massachusetts Maritime Academy graduate “04”. Keystone tug/barge/tanker experience.

GVA

General Vessel Assistant - Engine - Philip David Bianco, Hometown: Rapid City , S. Dakota

Been on McARTHUR II since, July 2006.

Worked in New York City with an elevator maintenance company for 8 years. Went to Las Vegas in 1978 and joined the bar tender union and worked for the Dunes Hotel. In 1980, moved to Midland , TX to work for the Hilton Corporation and attended Midland College . 1987 moved back to South Dakota and worked for S.C.I. Computer Corporation. Joined S.I.U. in October of 2005 and went to sea as S.A. Joined NOAA in July 2006 and hope to retire in 10 years.
