National VA Research Week – May 11-17, 2008

Veterans Affairs Secretary Dr. James B. Peake has proclaimed the week of May 11 as National VA Research Week. During that week, VA facilities around the country will highlight 60 years of innovation and discovery.

"The VA research program is the foundation for advancements in Veterans' health care and represents the promise of a better life," said Secretary Peake.

VA medical centers nationwide are planning open houses or other activities to commemorate the week and to thank veterans for their participation in research. Among the activities planned are:

  • research displays,
  • continuous slide shows,
  • veteran appreciation programs featuring VA researchers or local officials,
  • personal testimonies by veterans participating in research,
  • and some medical centers are opening their doors to show off new research lab facilities.

In Washington, DC, VA is marking National VA Research Week with exhibits, demonstrations, and a research forum on May 23 that will bring together top officials, award-winning researchers—including Nobelist Dr. Andrew Schally—veterans discussing the positive impact VA Research has had on their lives, and Health Affairs editor-in-chief Susan Dentzer. Also speaking will be World War II veteran and National Baseball Hall of Fame member Bob Feller, a legendary Cleveland Indians pitcher and longtime supporter of VA research. The American Legion, AMVETS, DAV, PVA, VFW, and VVA are all helping sponsor the event.

We encourage you to participate in VA Research Week activities in your area.
