A new study, "Safety and Tolerability of Tenofovir Vaginal Gel in Abstinent and Sexually Active HIV-Infected and Uninfected Women," (AIDS 2006;20(4):543-551) reports that tenofovir gel is both well tolerated and safe when used vaginally, leading the way to further studies to determine if the gel can prevent HIV transmission. Tenofovir gel has already been shown effective in blocking the transmission of simian immunodeficiency virus in animals. Read the story here.
