NOTE: The traffic data presented on this page is reported to the Department of Transportation on BTS Form 41 by Large Certificated Air Carriers to include carrier groups: Majors, Nationals, Large Regionals, and Medium Regionals. Traffic statistics for Small Certificated Air Carriers and Commuter Air Carriers are not included.

The final columns of Scheduled and Non-Scheduled Service data that are indicated in bold are estimates based upon the available data; as the actual final numbers become available on a monthly basis (that include late-filed data and revisions), these estimates are replaced by the actual final data, and the bold that denote estimates are removed.

July 2002
Data is considered preliminary for the first year due to late-reporting carriers and the on-going editing process to ensure data quality. For the July-September 2002 issues, the many changes in the data production environment require us to emphasize the preliminary nature of this data and the on-going checks for quality. While every effort has gone into verifying the accuracy of this data, there are several items to note: Items 1) and 2) are currently unexplained and are being examined.

  1. DHL: all values for September 2001 are missing and revenue ton-miles of freight for November 2001 are missing. Formal publication of the green book will not take place until the problem for this major carrier is corrected.
  2. The method for making Coach and First Class designations has changed so changes in the values for these variables are under review.
  3. Jet Blue's scheduled available ton-miles are extremely high for June 2002, and extremely low for July 2002.
  4. There is very large increase in Scheduled All-Cargo (almost 50%).
  5. Several cases have been identified in which available ton-miles for passengers, calculated from available seat-miles and assuming passengers plus baggage weigh 200 pounds, exceed available ton-miles.
  6. July 2002 -Allegiant, Atlantic Southeast, Champion, Sierra Pacific, and Sun Country are not included.

We continue to review the data quality issues that have been identified in these notes. Future issues of the Air Carrier Traffic Statistics will include the results of our research and this may result in changes to the currently reported data. Although the above items represent important caveats to the quality of this data, we also recognize the importance to our customers of having information on Air Carrier Traffic Statistics in a timely manner and would like to thank you for your patience and understanding.
