Although the name suggests French roots, Art Nouveau was one of the few asthetic movements that was international in scope and origin. Emerging simultaneously in several European countries, Art Nouveau took inspiration from a broad canvas that included the Arts and Crafts movement in Englans, Japanese flower arranging, and the art of the Middle Ages. Intended as a reaction to the staid academic historcism of the latter half of the nineteenth century, Art Nouveau manifested primarily through the practical and applied arts. Its influence, which quickly spread throughout Europe, is still felt today. In Germany, it was known as Jugendstil. In Austria, it was the Secessionist movement. In Paris, it flowered as the "modern style." The thirty posters in this book, gleaned from a collection of 100,000 in the Library of Congress, are some of the finest examples of Art Nouveau at its height.
