FDA’s CCR5 Antagonist Meeting Postponed
The
FDA has postponed the CCR5 Antagonist Review Group and the Forum for Collaborative HIV Research meeting
until early 2006.
The original meeting, scheduled for
January 18, 2006, was planned to address long-term clinical trial follow-up
issues in a timely manner. However, because additional trial data will be
available soon, the meeting will be pushed back to ensure that the public
discussion is as effective as possible.
The FDA will send out an
announcement once the new meeting date is set.

NIDA
HIV/AIDS Page for Teens
The National Institute on Drug
Abuse (NIDA) has dedicated a portion of the NIDA for Teens Web site
to HIV/AIDS and its implications for young people. According to the CDC,
over 38,000 young people age 13 to 24 were diagnosed with AIDS in the United
States by the end of 2003. The NIDA for Teens pages on HIV/AIDS
gives youths important information about how drug abuse and HIV are
related, how teens are affected by HIV, how teens can protect themselves
against HIV infection, and a section called “Ask Dr. NIDA: HIV, AIDS, and
Drug Abuse.” Check out the NIDA for Teens HIV/AIDS page here.
Tenth Anniversary of Protease
Inhibitors
The first protease inhibitor
was approved ten years ago this week,
establishing a new class of antiretroviral drug and ushering in a new era
of treatment for HIV infection. In December 1995, the approval of using
protease inhibitor drugs in combination with other antiretroviral drugs
was revolutionary. The availability of protease inhibitors raised
treatment standards, significantly improving the lives and health of
people living with HIV in the United States and around the world. To learn
more about treatment options for HIV/AIDS, check out the AIDSinfo fact sheet booklet
“HIV/AIDS
and Its Treatment: What You Should Know” .
