FDA Announces Discontinuation of Fortovase

Due to decreased demand, the FDA announced on May 27, 2005, the discontinuation of Fortovase, the soft-gel formulation of saquinavir. Roche Pharmaceuticals, the manufacturer of Fortovase, released a “Dear Health Care Provider” letter informing health care providers that the drug will be discontinued by February 15, 2006. Patients currently taking saquinavir soft-gel capsules should contact their doctors to discuss their alternatives. Invirase, the hard-gel capsule and tablet formulations of saquinavir mesylate, will continue to be marketed by Roche. FDA Announces Approval of Generic Version of Foscavir
On May 31, 2005, the FDA approved a generic version of Foscavir (foscarnet sodium injection), originally approved in 1991. One generic formulation of foscarnet sodium injection is being manufactured by Pharmaforce, Inc. This product is used for the treatment of cytomegalovirus (CMV) retinitis in patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Women’s Health Webcast—June 7, 2005

The Health Resources and Services Administration’s (HRSA) Office of Women’s Health and the Maternal and Child Health Bureau (MCHB) Division of Healthy Start and Perinatal Services are hosting a webcast, “More than Just a Number: Realities of Women and HIV/AIDS,” that will address women and HIV/AIDS in the United States. This webcast is scheduled for June 7, 2005, from 1:00 – 2:30 p.m., ET. Among the topics covered in this webcast are: the nature, scope, and prevalence of HIV/AIDS among women in the United States; challenges faced by women and their families affected by HIV/AIDS; provider issues related to serving women living with HIV/AIDS, with emphasis on community settings; and systems-based models of HIV/AIDS care for women and their families. National HIV Testing Day—June 27, 2005 

There’s still time to plan for and be part of National HIV Testing Day. This is an annual event sponsored by the National Association of People with AIDS (NAPWA). NAPWA’s goal is to encourage people at risk for HIV to get tested and learn their status.
