Public Health Laboratory Capacity in Louisiana After Hurricanes Katrina and Rita:

Announcement From the Louisiana Office of Public Health

Stephen J. Martin, Ph.D., D(ABMLI), Director of Laboratories, Louisiana Office of Public Health would like to update clinical laboratories in Louisiana.

Hurricanes Katrina and Rita significantly disrupted the public health laboratory capacity in Louisiana. As a result of that, some of the laboratory tests usually performed at the Central LA public health laboratory in New Orleans are now being performed at either selected LA regional public health laboratories or laboratories in other states. The regional laboratories that are fully operational include the Shreveport Regional Laboratory, Amite Regional Laboratory, and Lake Charles Regional Laboratory. These laboratories are capable of addressing issues regarding specimen submission for the various laboratory tests provided by the LA state public health laboratory system. Please contact any of these facilities for the most up-to-date information regarding shipping samples and specimen testing.
