Senior Scientist, Maternal and Infant Health Branch, Division of Reproductive Health, NCCDPHP

 

William Callaghan, MD, MPH, is the Senior Scientist for the Maternal and Infant Health Branch in the Division of Reproductive Health at the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (NCCDPHP). In this position he has scientific oversight of a group dedicated to research and public health surveillance in the areas of maternal morbidity and mortality, infant morbidity and mortality, and preterm delivery.

Dr. Callaghan earned BS and MS degrees in biology from Youngstown State University in Ohio. He received his MD from the Ohio State University College of Medicine in 1981, completed a residency in OB/GYN at Akron City Hospital, Akron, Ohio in 1985, and practiced general OB/GYN in Western North Carolina for 14 years in rural and urban settings. Between 1999 and 2001 he took a second residency in preventive medicine, at the University of South Carolina and earned his MPH degree with a concentration in epidemiology and biostatistics from that institution in 2000.

During his tenure at CDC, he has been an author on numerous peer-reviewed papers, presented his work in the field of maternal and infant health at national meetings, and provided technical assistance to states engaged in the identification and review of maternal deaths. He is certified by the American Board of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the American Board of Preventive Medicine.
