Technical & Software Requirements

Viewing the Tutorial

To view the tutorial, you will need the following:

Speakers attached to the computer are not required to view the tutorial. However, they are necessary if you want to hear the audio narration that goes with each demonstration.

How do I know if my browser will allow pop-up windows?

Any of the more recent Netscape, Internet Explorer, and Firefox browsers should run the JavaScript code to produce pop-up windows. However, the security settings on your browser may block them. Use the Pop-up blocker section on the Tech Tips page to determine whether your security settings will allow pop-up windows.

This tutorial makes heavy use of pop-up windows. This makes it easier for you to get additional information if you want and to return to the main page of each module without having to use the browser's Back button.

How do I know my monitor's resolution?

Go to the Monitor Resolution section of Tech Tips for help determining your monitor's resolution.

The minimum monitor resolution of 800x600 pixels is recommended because the CDC website is 800 pixels wide. If you use a narrower width resolution, you will have to scroll side to side, as well as up and down.

How do I get the free Adobe Acrobat Reader?

You can download the free Adobe Acrobat Reader from Adobe's website at http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html.

All NHANES documentation is in Acrobat .PDF format. You will need the Reader to view and read the documentation that accompanies the data files.

How do I get the free Adobe Flash 8 or greater player?

You can download the free Adobe Flash player from Adobe's website at http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=ShockwaveFlash&promoid=BIOW. (See: Adobe Flash Player section of Tech Tips for more information.)

All of the tutorial animations are in Flash .SWF format. To view them you will need the Flash player. However, you do not have to view the animations to complete the tutorial, they are an additional method of delivery if you want to view them.

Running Sample Code

These requirements apply only to modules with sample code. You must have a software license to run these SAS and/or SUDAAN on your personal computer. If you do not wish to run the code in the tutorial you may view the demonstration of the code instead. Program code used in this tutorial follow procedures available in SAS 9.1, or SAS 8.0 and SUDAAN 9.0, or SUDAAN 8.0

  • SUDAAN (Version 9.0; Research Triangle Institute, Research Triangle Park, NC) and/or
  • SAS Version 9.1 (Version 8.02; SAS Institute Inc, Cary, NC) statistical software

The sample code is all SAS or SAS-executable SUDAAN code and the sample datasets provided in this tutorial are SAS datasets for Windows. If you are using a Macintosh or Unix computer, you should download the data files from the NHANES web pages, as these are in SAS transport format (.XPT), and can be extracted and used on Windows, Macintosh or Unix computers.
