The District of Columbia and U.S. Territories Quarters Program lesson plans are now available on the United States Mint H.I.P. Pocket Change™ Web site for you to use in your classroom! Take a look at the lesson plans created specifically to celebrate the District of Columbia quarter: "Musician Extraordinaire" (K and 1), "Let's Do a Biography" (2 and 3), and "Music to My Ears" (4–6). After that, check out the rest of the territory-specific plans that are FREE to download, and are available in sets designed specifically for grades K and 1, 2 and 3, and 4 through 6.
Make a "Connection"
The District of Columbia quarter features Duke Ellington, a great jazz composer and musician. Duke Ellington was born in the District of Columbia and grew up there. Have your students research a famous musician that was born in their city, state, or territory. Have the students create a visual display or short skit about the musician, the genre of music associated with this musician, and any other biographical information.
