Striking Out

1799:
The Mint becomes an independent agency, no longer under the Department of State.
1801:
As the colonies did, the new United States begins making large silver peace medals.  Theses medals are given as signs of peace to American Indian chiefs and warriors.  Lewis and Clark soon use these medals on their trip.
1816:
A steam engine is used for rolling the metal sheets.  Before this, the rolling machines were powered by oxen, horses, or men.  When a hand press was used, it took a man and a boy about two minutes to make one coin.
