agreement had been reached to provide U.S. automakers the boost that
they need to build advanced, cleaner vehicles
"In the nation, one out of 10 jobs is auto related, and right here in
southwest Michigan, we have dozens businesses employing thousands of
workers that are directly related to the auto industry - and this loan
program helps protect those jobs and plants the seeds to create new
ones," said Upton.

August 21, 2008 - Fred presents Decatur’s Mike Siver, a veteran of the United States Navy with the National Defense Service Medal. TMSN Siver served in the United States Navy from 1963 to 1967, spending most of his Naval career aboard the U.S. Submarine, Sea Robin. Siver is also eligible for the Submarine Pin and Scuba Diver Insignias, which Fred is working to obtain for the Navy veteran. “It is a great honor to pay tribute to Mike Siver for his service to our nation,” said Upton. “Over four decades ago, in the prime of his youth, Siver put his life on hold and left loved ones behind to join the United States Navy. While this National Defense Service Medal is long overdue, we are all grateful for Siver’s service to the nation.” Joining Fred and Siver for the presentation was Decatur VFW Post 6248 Commander, Dick Majewski.

July 8, 2008 - Fred joins Kalamazoo Transportation Director Bill Schomisch to
underscore the importance of public transit in the wake of record fuel
prices. The U.S. House recently approved legislation to provide a
financial boost to public transit systems, ensuring reliable and
affordable transportation for working Americans. “Public transit and
Amtrak are vital to our community as they provide students, seniors and
working folks affordable and reliable transportation. Providing a boost
to public transit is an important step, but we owe it to working
families to pursue long-term solutions to achieve energy independence
with American-made energy,” said Upton during the press conference.

July 8, 2008 - Fred visits with a local student aboard one of Kalamazoo’s Metro Transit’s buses during the morning commute. The young man is a student at KVCC and relies upon the transit service four times a day. To address the strain caused by rising fuel costs on public transit, the U.S. House approved legislation on June 26th by a vote of 322 to 98 to provide a financial boost to public transit systems to ensure that they will continue to provide reliable and affordable transportation to working Americans.

July 8, 2008 - Fred welcomes four generations of Captain Jeffary Hoose’s family to his
Kalamazoo office. Fred presented Captain Hoose, a veteran of Operation
Iraqi Freedom and true American hero, the Purple Heart, Combat
Infantryman Badge and Bronze Star Medal “V” for exceptionally valorous
conduct in the line of fire. Captain Hoose, who comes from a family
rich in military tradition, was joined by his grandfather (pictured
left) who was a WWII Naval aviator who fought in the Pacific Theater.

Fred joins Kalamazoo Mayor Bobby Hopewell and Governor Jennifer Granholm
for the launch of the Patriot hospital bed for veterans, the product of
a collaborative effort between Stryker and Alliant Healthcare Products,
a veteran-owned small business medical device company in Richland. The
Patriot beds were “designed by veterans, for veterans.” The beds have
unique design features to reduce caretaker back stress, prevent patient
falls, and to make the beds easy for patients and caregivers to adjust.
This important product will greatly assist in the care for the men and
women who have been injured in Iraq and Afghanistan.

November 20th, 2007 - Fred presents the Purple Heart, with first oak leaf cluster, to Kalamazoo World War II veteran, Mr. Thomas Bubin. Mr. Bubin served as a Sergeant in the United States Army, seeing major combat action in the Ardennes, Rhineland and central Europe. “As folks across southwest Michigan come together to join loved ones in celebration of Thanksgiving, we give a heartfelt thanks to Mr. Thomas Bubin and his comrades of the ‘Greatest Generation’ who defended liberty and freedom across the Atlantic,” said Upton. Mr. Bubin received the Purple Heart for wounds suffered in Luxembourg in December of 1944.

August 7, 2007 - Upton Welcomes U.S. Energy Secretary Bodman to SW Michigan.
Bodman accepted Fred's invitation to visit southwest Michigan and see firsthand the region's leadership in developing new technologies to fulfill the nation's future energy needs. Fred and Secretary Bodman hosted a roundtable with nearly a dozen of the region's leading energy players ranging from academic research to nuclear power, toured Whirlpool research and development sites and visited the Cook nuclear plant.

April 27, 2007 - Fred presents service medals to 23-year old Kalamazoo Iraq War veteran Eric Laninga. Prior to spending time in Iraq, U.S. Army Private First Class Laninga was stationed in Korea. Upton presented Laninga with the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Army Service Ribbon, Iraq Campaign Medal, Korea Defense Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and U.S. Army Good Conduct Medal. Laninga had already received a Purple Heart for wounds suffered in Iraq.

Fred and Rep. Joe Donnelly (D-South Bend) testified this afternoon before the House Veterans' Affairs Subcommittee on Disability Assistance and Memorial Affairs on their bipartisan legislation to streamline the process for the nation's vets to promptly receive disability benefits for injuries suffered in combat. Under the current system, when a veteran applies for benefits, he or she is required to prove that their disability is service connected and thus worthy of benefits, which currently takes an average of 177 days.

Fred presents the Bronze Star to Marcellus WWII veteran, Mr. David Thornton. Mr. Thornton served in the United States Army from February 10th, 1942 to December 7th, 1945 and saw combat action in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater. In 1962, the United States Army awarded the Bronze Star to Mr. Thornton, but he never received his much deserved recognition.

neglect. This year's Children's Trust Fund Annual Recognition Awards was
held at the Radisson Hotel in Kalamazoo. Upton handed out 14 awards on
behalf of the Children's Trust Fund.

October 2, 2006 - Fred joins David Spooner, U.S. Department of Commerce Assistant Secretary, and Niall Condon, Pfizer Global Manufacturing Site Leader, to sign Pfizer's Foreign Trade Zone Designation Certificate. Upton had worked with Pfizer in urging the Department of Commerce to grant the foreign-trade zone status. By helping to keep and grow Pfizer's U.S.-based manufacturing, approval of FTZ status supports jobs both at the Kalamazoo-area facility and at the U.S. companies that supply Pfizer. It is Upton's understanding that Pfizer will now be able to trim costs and be more competitive by at least a million dollars per year at the Kalamazoo facility.

September 5th 2006 Fred joins local officials in Kalamazoo for the official groundbreaking to expand I-94. In last year's highway bill, Fred was successful in helping deliver over $40 million to widen I-94 from 4 to 6 lanes between 12th Street and Sprinkle Road. In 1998, Fred helped secure nearly $4 million to assist MDOT in completing preliminary engineering of widening the I-94 corridor. Without that initial funding, the project would be decades away from completion.

August 2nd, 2006 - Fred visits Eaton Corporation’s facility in Galesburg to discuss hybrid technologies. Eaton has been aggressive in pursuing technologies to improve fuel efficiency for medium and heavy duty trucks. Over the last two years, Fred has secured several million dollars for Eaton in the Defense spending bill to develop drivetrain systems that will improve the performance and safety of military vehicles deployed in rugged terrain such as the desert and mountains. Eaton’s revolutionary stability control technology will dramatically increase the safety and mobility of U.S. military tactical wheeled vehicles.

July 14th, 2006 - Fred pumps the first gallon of E85 in the Kalamazoo region. Fred joined Todd Nelson, owner of Bob and Kays Shark Wash on Stadium Drive in Kalamazoo, to discuss the importance of ethanol to easing our nation’s dependence on foreign oil. Bob and Kays is now the first gas station in the region to offer E85 and the 13th overall station in Michigan.

May 26, 2006 - Following a late night of votes, Upton met with constituents on Friday morning prior to the reported gun fire in the Rayburn House Office Building . An FBI tactical team conducted a sweep of every office in the Rayburn House Office Building . After nearly 5 hours, it was determined that there were no shots fired and construction in the garage level was believed to be the cause of the false alarm. Once the lockdown of the Rayburn Building was lifted, Upton headed back to Michigan for the Memorial Day District work period.
