Partner:   Partners: $ 0
Project Name: Colorado Fourteeners Program Total Project Cost: $ 1,500

Project Purpose/Objectives:

Work in partnership with the Colorado Fourteeners Initiative (CFI) and Rocky Mountain Field Institute to protect and preserve Colorado’s fourteen thousand foot peaks. The purpose of work being done is to build sustainable trails, educate visitors, and restore damaged trails.

Work Performed:

Trail Reconstruction/Restoration Projects: Mt. Massive (680 person days, 2000 linear feet of trail construction, 422 rock structures and 850 sq ft of rock retaining wall) , Mt. Evans (368 person days, 3,600 linear feet of trail, 150 rock structures, and 900 sq ft of rock retaining wall) Pyramid Peak(473 person days, 2000 linear feet of trail, over 300 rock steps and check dams, and more than 200 sq ft of rock retaining wall), and Windom Peak (148 person days, 161 rock structures, 50 sq ft rock retaining wall) Volunteers participated in 34 weekend projects contributing 136 person days.

Trail Maintenance Projects: 755 volunteer days were contributed to the “adopt-a-peak” trail maintenance program working on 21 peaks. Youth Corps were funded by State Parks to complete intensive maintenance or trail reconstruction/restoration on La Plata Peak (2 weeks), Grays Peak and Torreys Peak (2 weeks), Mt. Massive (10 weeks), an Mt. Evans (10 weeks).

Education: Work was started on 15 trailhead kiosks. Peak Rangers patrolled Wilderness peaks in the Elk and San Juan Ranges, they made 1,200 visitor contacts. Volunteer Peak Stewards verbally contacted 1,132 hikers on 14ers. CFI’s website averaged 5,227 hits per day.

Out year Project Design: Design was completed for projects on Mt. Yale, Mt. Shavano, Crestone Peak and Uncompahgre Peak. Design was started on started on Mt. Democrat, Mt. Lincoln, Mt. Bross, and Blanca Peak. Exploration was started on Mount Wilson, El Diente, and the Maroon Bells.

Benefits:

These trail projects protect against and rehabilitate human caused detrimental impact to soil, vegetation, and wildlife. The projects establish trails that are logically aligned, well delineated and easily definable as the standard route, exhibit slow rates of change with regular maintenance, are designed to be compatible with side slope grades and soil conditions, have good natural drainage, and are constructed to provide durable surfaces for current and predicted future use levels. Educational aspects educate Forest Visitor on Alpine Ecology, what they can do to protect the mountain from human impacts, Leave No Trace Principles, mountain safety, and Wilderness.
