 On August 16th, 2006, New Jersey’s original Bill of Rights left the state for the second time since its receipt by the State Legislature in 1789. The large, framed manuscript joined the four-page Ratification of the United States Constitution for a short trip to Philadelphia, where it was digitally scanned and is now available on the web. Major Addition to the Documentary Treasures on the Web
The State Archives added a new section to its Documentary Treasures on the web relating to New Jersey’s original federal charters and amendment ratifications. There are now 170 new web-pages of images and transcriptions of New Jersey’s manuscript Ratification Convention Minutes, Engrossed Ratification, Bill of Rights, and the various actions of the State Legislature relative to the 27 constitutional amendments. We hope this will prove a useful online resource for historians, educators, librarians and archivists. To view the new pages, start here. |

Have You Seen This Yet?
Images and transcriptions of New Jersey's original state constitutions of 1776, 1844 and 1947 are available online. The State's first charter, signed on the 2nd of July, 1776, was New Jersey's own declaration of independence.

The American Revolution in New Jersey
The State Archives is currently engaged in conservation of over 5,200 leaves of Revolutionary War manuscripts. The colossal project is funded by a federal "Save America's Treasures" grant.

Early Colonial Records
Interested in New Jersey's proprietary period? In December 2005, the Proprietors of West New Jersey deposited their ancient surveys, maps and record books with the State. This vast collection joins the State Archives' many colonial manuscript collections, including the papers of the East Jersey Proprietors acquired by the State in 1998.
