Route 52 Causeway Bridge Replacement
Somers Point Circle Elimination

Ocean City and Somers Point
Atlantic and Cape May Counties

route 52 causeway today

Overview

The second part of the Route 52 Causeway replacement and circle elimination is in its final design phase. Construction will begin upon completion of the first part of the work, which is under way and scheduled for completion in December 2009. During this stage, the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) will finalize the design and continue ongoing coordination with the communities.

NJDOT has obtained all of the necessary environmental approvals. The work to be completed during this stage will result in a design that will be used to develop final plans and specifications for construction scheduled to begin in late 2009 and last three years.

Scope

This next part of the project extends from the intersection of Routes 9 and 52 in Somers Point, south along Route 52 (MacArthur Boulevard), through the Somers Point Circle, over Ship Channel to Elbow Island. The section of the Causeway from Elbow Island to Garrets Island is currently under construction.

The work resumes on Route 52 at Garrets Island, over Beach Thorofare and continues over Great Egg Harbor Bay to Ocean City at 9th Street to terminate at Bay Avenue.

The bridges will have two 12-foot lanes and 8-foot shoulders in each direction. Traffic will be separated by a concrete median barrier within the bridge limits.

Community Enhancements

Pedestrians and bicyclists will be able to travel safely between Somers Point and Ocean City for the first time using a wide sidewalk that will also accommodate wheelchairs. New pedestrian and bicycle improvements are planned for Somers Point and Ocean City for access to the bridge, the historic district, restaurants, docks and parks.

This project is important to New Jersey’s tourism industry. NJDOT has been working closely with community associations, elected officials and local residents to develop aesthetically pleasing designs and amenities that enhance recreation.

Boat ramps, fishing piers, parking lots, and walkways are among the enhancements included in this project. In addition, the Ocean City Visitors Center will be reconstructed as part of the new bridge’s Scenic Overlook.

NJDOT welcomes your input. Contact us and attend public meetings.
