Genetic Testing in Clinical Practice: A Team Approach

Type:

Cooperative agreement with Dartmouth Medical School
Goal(s):

  1. creation of a training program to emphasize the genetic testing process and increase knowledge and appreciation of the complexities of using genetics in clinical practice. The program highlights a team approach that integrates clinical, counseling, and laboratory services

  2. design a program amenable to CD-ROM and distance-learning models using broadband internet and satellite delivery
Model:
This will be an interactive multimedia program using the "virtual clinic" - an educational tool that simulates interactions between patients and physicians facing genetic issues.

Target audience:
This program is primarily aimed toward health care providers who are not specialists in medical genetics, but who may see patients with disorders - or who have concerns about disorders - in which knowledge of clinical genetics can positively affect outcomes. Other audiences include students, genetic counselors, medical laboratory professionals, public health professional, and others who are involved in the offering of genetic testing services.

Progress:
   Ongoing. A beta version will be completed by 2002. Contents will include several interactive patient vignettes, counseling sessions, laboratory tours, and a resource section.
