Intelligent Transportation Systems Engineering
Overview
Intelligent Transportation Systems Engineering supports
Statewide Traffic Operations by managing the development,
implementation, and support for ITS initiatives. These initiatives include integrated traffic signal systems, incident management systems,
traffic management systems, traffic information systems and other ITS components, including but not limited to computerized arterial traffic
signals, Dynamic/Variable Message Signs, closed circuit television surveillance (see
Traffic Cameras on the web), Highway Advisory Radio and Phone
Systems, traffic movement detectors, and a fiber optic communication network.
General information regarding the Department's overall ITS plan is provided in the
ITS 10-Year Investment Strategy
(pdf 597k).
During the initial development of any project along State highways the Project Manager, designer, or developer must check for existing ITS
facilities as provided in the ITS Devices Inventory, and then a) obtain
as-built information to confirm any potential impacts and b)
contact NJDOT ITS Engineering on directions for
addressing those impacts. Proposed work in the vicinity of the fiber network must be confirmed through
field markouts. The
ITS Devices Inventory site also includes contacts for directions on ITS devices
administered by other units within the Department.
Development and construction of any ITS facility must be in conformance with the
New Jersey Statewide ITS Architecture
(pdf 3.5m) and the ITS Interim Guidelines.
