SUMMARY
Roberts arrived in Liberia in 1829 from Virginia. In 1839 Roberts was appointed Vice Colonial Governor of the Commonwealth of Liberia and took over as Governor of the Commonwealth, in 1841, when Thomas Buchanan died. Served as the first and seventh president of Liberia.

NOTES
Case: back only, diamond inside geometric design.

Label taped on back of case: President Roberts.

This is a copy daguerreotype. Anson was not known to have operated a daguerreotype studio when President and Mrs. Roberts visited the United States. The original daguerreotype is attributed to Augustus Washington. See similar backdrop in DAG no. 1029.
