American Association of Occupational Health Nurses

The American Association of Occupational Health Nurses (AAOHN) works through its members nationwide to advance the profession of occupational and environmental health nursing. Since 1942, AAOHN has promoted excellence in the occupational health nursing profession by providing a wide range of services for workplace health and safety for more than 13,000 nurses across the country. The Association comprises approximately 180 state, local, and regional chapters nationwide, governed by a 19-member elected Board of Directors.

As part of an ongoing cooperative agreement with ATSDR, AAOHN has been developing and disseminating environmental health information to its members by

  • holding workshops on environmental health nursing in Texas and Tennessee;
  • developing two national advisories for distribution to its members on the importance of including environmental health in daily practice for occupational health nurses and nurse practitioners;
  • revising a core curriculum on occupational and environmental nursing;
  • constructing a website for efficiently distributing, to its members and others, the answers to environmental health and safety questions; and
  • presenting nursing project information at an international conference on environmental health.

As part of the AAOHN/ATSDR partnerhsip, AAOHN will perform a multi-county needs assessment for the Savannah River Project; a comprehensive, collaborative effort coordinated with ATSDR, community groups, the Oakridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), and other federal agencies to help guide future health education activities for the area.

The AAOHN/ATSDR partnership is vital to expanding the knowledge base and functional capacity of nurses, both nationally and internationally, to address environmental health issues. AAOHN activities bring together nursing organizations, schools of nursing, and communities.
