WASHINGTON, July 3, 2003 – One soldier died and another was wounded in separate July 3 incidents in Iraq, according to a U.S. Central Command news release.
A soldier attached to the 1st Armored Division died of a gunshot wound in a non-combat incident July 3 in Baghdad, said the release. The soldier's name is withheld pending next-of-kin notification, and an investigation is underway. In the other incident, a 1st Armored Division soldier and a 6-year-old Iraqi boy were wounded during an early morning firefight in the Kadhimyah neighborhood, located in a rural part of Baghdad. A CENTCOM release stated an Iraqi man attacked a routine U.S. patrol, shooting one of the soldiers. They returned fire in self-defense, killing the gunman and wounding a boy with the gunman. The two were evacuated to the 28th Combat Support Hospital, where both were reported in stable condition. In the past 24 hours the 4th Infantry Division conducted six raids, resulting in 32 detained individuals, according to another July 3 CENTCOM release. Division troops also confiscated weapons, including four rocket-propelled grenades, two pistols, two AK-47s and a shotgun. They also seized an undetermined amount of Iraqi currency. Also overnight, the 101st Airborne Division detained 10 individuals who were attempting to loot a wheat factory. The unit took possession of two vehicles used in the attempt. The 1st Marine Expeditionary Force also detained an Iraqi man and woman for possession of four AK-47s and four rocket-propelled grenades. According to the CENTCOM release, the man and woman were collecting weapons for an attack on coalition forces.
