C O R R E C T E DThe Department of Defense announced today the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office (TECRO) in the United States has requested a possible sale of 131 MK 46 MOD 5(A)S torpedoes, containers, support and test equipment, spare and repair parts, personnel training and training equipment, publications and technical documentation, engineering and technical assistance, supply support and other related elements of logistics support. The estimated cost is $69 million. This proposed sale is consistent with United States law and policy as expressed in Public Law 96-8. Taiwan will use these torpedoes on their S-70 helicopters to maintain an operational Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) capability. Taiwan currently has air launched MK 46 torpedoes in its inventory and will have no difficulty absorbing these additional torpedoes into its armed forces. The proposed sale of this equipment and support will not affect the basic military balance in the region. The prime contractor will be Raytheon Systems Company, Naval and Maritime Systems Unit, Mukilteo, Wash. There are no offset agreements proposed to be entered into in connection with this potential sale. Implementation of this proposed sale will not require the assignment of any U.S. Government personnel or contractor representatives to Taiwan. There will be no adverse impact on U.S. defense readiness as a result of this proposed sale.
