Abstract:

This policy brief describes how Assisted Living Facilities (ALFs) can improve and enhance residential long-term health care for patients living in rural communities. It compares services currently offered by nursing homes and rural ALFs. The brief presents challenges seniors may encounter, such as affordability of health care and access to services. It includes funding recommendations for Medicaid and low-income seniors who are interested in ALFs.
