September 12, 1997

INFORMATION MEMORANDUM
AoA-IM-FY-97-16

TO : STATE AND AREA AGENCIES AND TRIBES ADMINISTERING PROGRAMS UNDER THE OLDER AMERICANS ACT

SUBJECT : United States Department of Agriculture Nutrition Program for the Elderly - Reimbursable Meals

LEGAL AND RELATED REFERENCES : Older Americans Act of 1965, As Amended

The purpose of this memorandum is to call to the attention of state and area agencies on aging and tribes a recently issued memorandum from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) regarding the Nutrition Program for the Elderly (NPE). This memorandum has been sent to USDA regional offices.

Questions have arisen within the aging network about the eligibility of meals for reimbursement by the USDA. The USDA reviewed the Older Americans Act and policy documents dating back as far as 1980 which address this issue and has consolidated the criteria contained in these documents in the accompanying memorandum.

The adherence of all state and area agencies on aging, and tribes, to the policy stated in this memorandum is required in order to receive USDA reimbursement.

EFFECTIVE DATE : Immediately
