MEMORANDUM FOR CORRESPONDENTS


MULTINATIONAL EXERCISE COOPERATIVE ZENITH 96 ANNOUNCED

NATO's Partnership for Peace (PfP) Exercise Cooperative Zenith 96 will be heldfrom May 7 to 16 at Patrick Air Force Base, Florida.

Exercise Cooperative Zenith focuses on NATO Search and Rescue (SAR) proceduresin relation to peacekeeping and humanitarian operations. The exercise willinvolve approximately 53 officers from the following nations: Albania, Armenia,Azerbaijan, Balarus, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Georgia, Hungary,Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Poland, Romania, Russia,Slovakia, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan. It will also involve approximately 18officers from four NATO nations: Canada, The Netherlands, Great Britain andthe United States.

The goal of the exercise is to foster interoperability among participants andthe forces they represent, through the exchange of information related tosearch and rescue operations. The exercise is divided into four phases. Thefirst phase comprises a symposium on NATO and PfP nations' SAR procedures,equipment and training. Phase two consists of a cultural exchange programdesigned to improve mutual understanding and communication within the PfPframework. Command post training in phase three will illustrate and practiceSAR concepts and procedures, and the planning of a SAR mission. The exerciseculminates in phase four with a SAR operation in the field.

Exercise Cooperative Zenith 96 is conducted by U.S. Air Force General RichardE. Hawley, Commander U.S. Air Combat Command on behalf of U.S. Marine CorpsGeneral John J. Sheehan, NATO Supreme Allied Commander, Atlantic ( ).
